$400 Million Investment from Citadel Securities at a $20 Billion Valuation
When investor Rafał Sobczak sent me the news, I thought I was dreaming. While Polish tech and business media rightfully covered ElevenLabs' $11 billion valuation from every angle, Citadel Securities' $400 million investment into Crypto.com was met with radio silence.
The only place to read about it in Poland was on automated sites using AI to machine-translate English articles into Polish.
So let us state it loud and clear: on July 16, 2026, financial tech giant Citadel Securities invested $400 million in Crypto.com - co-founded and led by Polish CEO Kris Marszalek - at a valuation reaching $20 billion!
“Funding is expected to accelerate Crypto.com's expansion into all asset classes, including tokenized securities and derivatives, bridging the gap between digital assets and traditional markets to create a more efficient 24/7 financial ecosystem,” stated the official press release, cited by Reuters, Bloomberg, and the Financial Times.
The release naturally concluded with Crypto.com's long-standing tagline: “Cryptocurrency in Every Wallet.”
The only detail missing compared to previous updates was the total user count. Consequently, we must rely on the 140 million users reported in similar announcements throughout 2025.
Quoted in the release, Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek said: “We are thrilled to work with Citadel Securities to continue driving the crypto industry into a new era of institutionalization.”
The co-founder added: “The size of the opportunity in front of us is staggering, as crypto increasingly becomes the rails for finance. Having built the right regulatory and tech infrastructure over the last decade, Crypto.com is now perfectly positioned to capture this new wave of growth across all asset classes.”
A Masterclass in Marketing: From Ai.com to Super Bowl and Trump
How did Polish media and the public manage to overlook Kris Marszalek's success with Crypto.com? It is not entirely surprising, given that Marszalek - who has lived and worked in Asia for years - is often viewed in his homeland through a purely anecdotal lens. What does that mean? Local media tend to report on him through the prism of high-profile marketing moves rather than core business strategy. And there is certainly no shortage of spectacle.
Crypto.com has leveraged sports marketing for years, securing naming rights to Los Angeles' iconic arena (formerly the Staples Center). Their ad campaigns regularly feature A-list celebrities, including actor Matt Damon and NBA superstar LeBron James.
Other notable moves include:
White House Event: In June 2026, Marszalek's Crypto.com served as a premier partner for the UFC FREEDOM event, hosted on the White House lawn by US President Donald Trump.
Super Bowl Ad & Ai.com: In February 2026, the company aired a 30-second Super Bowl commercial promoting its autonomous AI agent platform. The platform operates under the premium domain Ai.com, which Marszalek acquired for $70 million in cryptocurrency.
Eight years earlier, Marszalek executed a similar branding maneuver when he rebranded Monaco to Crypto.com, purchasing the domain for $12 million (reportedly 30% of the company's capital at the time).
Trump Media Partnership: In August 2025, Crypto.com officially announced a strategic partnership with Trump Media, the entity managing business ventures tied to Donald Trump.
Mar-a-Lago Meeting: In December 2024, Kris Marszalek was among the very first crypto executives to meet President Trump following his re-election, prior to his formal inauguration. The private meeting took place at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
“Red Flags” and Kris Marszalek's Early Stumbles
The most comprehensive coverage of Marszalek's past appeared in December 2022. On one hand, Crypto.com was heavily featured in Polish media as an official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
At the time, Marszalek gave exclusive interviews to Gazeta Wyborcza, where journalist Bolesław Breczko published the most in-depth profile of the entrepreneur to date, charting his rocky road to success.
Days later, however, CNBC published an even sharper investigative piece. The American outlet highlighted Marszalek's past business bankruptcy, legal disputes, and complaints from former business partners, labeling them as significant “red flags.”
The Crypto.com co-founder defended his record. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“I'm proud of my scars and how I've persevered through adversity. Failure taught me humility, not to over-promise, and how to plan for the worst.”
From Small-Town Poland to Hong Kong: Who Is Kris Marszalek Really?
Despite his rise, neither Polish nor American media have paid much attention to Krzysztof “Kris” Marszalek's Polish roots.
And a word of caution regarding SEO-generated articles: many claim he was born in 1975 or 1977, both of which are incorrect.
The clearest picture emerges from a fascinating profile in GQ Magazine, which amusingly noted that due to his calm demeanor and understated appearance, Marszalek looks more like “the guy they send to fix the printer.”
Krzysztof “Kris” Marszalek was actually born in 1979 and grew up in a tiny Polish village of fewer than 100 people. He states that he is non-religious and does not believe in God.
His entrepreneurial journey reportedly began at age 15, selling wholesale computer hardware and software. He later attended university (likely Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, though sources vary), but dropped out before graduating.
In 2003, a business partner offered him an opportunity to move to Hong Kong. What followed there, as Marszalek puts it, was “a mix of successes and failures.”
To this day, he speaks far more openly about Hong Kong than his upbringing in Poland. Asked about his homeland on a podcast, he remarked: “I don't want to bore anyone with stories about my childhood. It was fine. But back in the 80s, it was a completely different country before we transitioned to democracy. That experience makes you appreciate the opportunities of the free world even more.”
In another interview, he explained the origin of his surname to the host: “If you translate it, it literally means ‘Field Marshal.’”
“Maybe that explains your disciplined approach to business,” the host replied with a smile.
* Edited 29.07.26. The previously mentioned ElevenLabs valuation of $22 billion was reported by the media as planned for autumn 2026.
